Hello my name is Alex Giordano and I live in the NJ area. I don't know if this is just the area that I am in but it feels like route setting is something that you need professional experience but no one wants to work with you on learning it. I was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to start into learning how to do the craft and getting into this line of work. Also most gyms require USAC certifications but they are only held in a few locations and not very often, is it normal to travel for these?
I am basically about to just build a woody in my backyard and just start going I want to do it so badly. All I do is watch IFSC competitions for the movements of the climbs and read everything from the Routesetters Anonymous group to "Fundamentals of Routesetting" by Louie Anderson. I am extremely interested in learning more in the art of route setting. I have been working at a rock gym for over two years now and have dealt with all help from cleaning and stripping to forerunning and tweaking. The only part I have not gotten much exposure into is the setting. I have set a few problems here and there but want to have much more time with it. I am also right now coaching and would like to be more able to set for my youth team to train. I have always prided myself in being a technical climber and am constantly staring at every climb for moves and sequences so I thought this would be a natural progression. I can forerun V7+ and 5.12+. I am so ready to put in the work for this even so far as setting and if its not a five star problem tearing it down and starting all over but it seems like no gym cares to give me a chance.
Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!
